“We receive the Son’s light from the Father’s light in the light of the Spirit: That is what we ourselves have seen and what we proclaim- it is the plain and simple truth of the Trinity.” - Gregory of Nyssa (330-395)
Gregory of Nyssa was an articulate defender of the doctrine of the Trinity, as defined by the Council of Nicaea. He defended this belief during a period when much of the Roman Empire’s power elite sought to suppress Nicene Trinitarian Christianity in favor of a subtle form of Arianism (the heretical belief that Jesus was a creature and not the creator). Gregory of Nyssa was the brother of Basil the Great and Macrina and friend of Gregory Nazianzus. Together, these early church leaders are known as the ‘Cappadocian Fathers and Mothers.’
Almighty God, you gave your servant Gregory of Nyssa special gifts of grace to understand and teach the truth revealed in Christ Jesus: Grant that by this teaching we may know you, the one true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
